Help, for technicians
Using Proofwalk on site
You do not need an account and there is nothing to install. This is short on purpose: you are probably reading it one-handed with a tool in the other.
Joining
Someone sends you a link, by text or as a QR code.
- Tap the link. It opens in the browser already on your phone.
- Read the notice and tap "I agree, continue." It tells you what is collected: your camera when it is on, any photos you send, chat messages, and a recording if the specialist starts one. "I do not agree" is a real button and shares nothing.
- Tap "Join."
Your camera is off at this point, and that is on purpose. It saves your battery through the parts of the job where nobody needs to see anything. Talking, photos and the checklist all work with the camera off.
If anything is going wrong, "Having trouble? Photos and chat only" skips straight to a mode with no camera at all. The job still gets documented.
Turning the camera on
Two ways, and both need you:
- You start it. Tap the video button, or "Start video" on the banner saying the camera is off.
- The specialist asks. A banner appears saying they would like to see your camera, with Start video and Not now.
Nobody can turn your camera on remotely without you tapping. The specialist can also ask you to turn it off again, and that is your call too. Your browser will ask permission the first time, which is the phone asking, not us.
The buttons along the bottom
Not all of them appear on every phone. Anything your camera cannot do is hidden rather than shown broken.
| Button | What it does |
|---|---|
| Camera | Takes a full-resolution photo and sends it. Sharper than the video, always. |
| Flip | Switches between the rear and front camera. |
| Focus | Forces the camera to focus again. Use it on serial plates and labels, where autofocus gives up. Android only. |
| Flashlight | Turns the phone torch on. Android only, because Safari will not let a website do it. On iPhone use Control Centre. |
| Microphone | Mutes and unmutes you. |
| Upload | Send a photo from your camera roll, or take one with the phone's own camera app. |
| Chat | Type to the specialist. Useful when it is too loud to talk. |
Camera or Upload?
Camera is the fast one. It grabs a full-resolution frame without leaving the page.
Upload is for the other two cases: a photo you took before the session started, and anything the live camera cannot get a clean shot of. It opens your phone's own camera app and photo library, so if focus is fighting you, take it there and send it.
After you send a photo taken that way, a Save to phone button appears. Tap it if you want the picture kept on your phone as well. Android usually does not save photos taken through a browser, so that button is how you get your own copy.
Photos, notes and markup
Every photo you send goes into the job report. After each one, a banner offers to add to it.
- Note. Type what the specialist cannot see. "Port 3 was already cracked before I touched it." "Had to reroute, the conduit is blocked." That knowledge otherwise leaves the site with you.
- Markup. Draw on the photo with a pen, arrow or circle to point at what matters.
Marking up a photo creates a second picture. The original stays exactly as it was, because it is the evidence and your drawing is your reading of it.
The checklist
If the job has one, it sits below the video and you work down it.
- Capture takes the photo for the step you are on.
- Done marks the step complete.
- Some steps will not close without a photo. That is intentional: the photo is what makes the report worth anything later.
- Confirm install complete signs the whole thing off at the end, with a timestamp against it.
When the signal is bad
This is built for basements, risers and plant rooms, so the awkward cases are handled.
- Photos taken with no signal are not lost. They queue on the phone and send themselves when the connection returns. You can close the page or lock the phone and they survive.
- Video quality drops before it disconnects. It steps down and back up on its own. Ignore it.
- Photos stay full resolution whatever the video is doing. A serial plate is readable in the photo even when the live picture looks awful.
- If the camera stops, the session carries on in photo and chat mode rather than dying.
Worth knowing
Keep the page open while you work. Locking the phone or switching apps pauses the camera. Coming back restarts it on its own, but the session needs the tab alive.
The link works for this one job. When the specialist closes the session it stops working and you cannot rejoin. That is by design.
Recordings are deleted after 14 days. Photos and the report stay with the job.
Point the camera at the equipment. Not at people who have not agreed to be filmed, not at paperwork or screens with personal details, and not into parts of a building the job does not involve.
Full detail is in the notice for technicians.
If something is wrong
Ask the specialist first, in chat. They can see more than you can, including your connection quality and what your camera reported it could do.
For anything about the photographs themselves, or to ask for them to be deleted, contact the company that sent you the link. They own the job. If you cannot reach them, write to support@proofwalk.io and we will pass it on.
